International Master Zbigniew Doda

Not every great career begins with a smooth path to success.

In his early years, Zbigniew Doda battled a serious lung disease and spent many months in healthcare facilities. And yet, he went on to become one of the most important figures in postwar Polish chess and the most outstanding representative of the chess section of KKS Lech Poznań.

Born in Poznań, Doda was one of the country’s top players in the 1960s and 1970s. He won the Polish classical chess championship twice (1964 and 1967). He was the national vice-champion three times and competed in the Polish Championship finals as many as 21 times. Together with the railway workers’ team, he won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Bulgaria.

He also competed in the Chess Olympiads seven times. He represented Poland in Leipzig, Varna, Tel Aviv, Havana, Lugano, Siegen, and Nice, among other places, scoring a total of 52.5 points in 92 games. In 1964, he was awarded the title of FIDE International Master.

On the international stage, he was able to defeat top-class players. His most notable victories include games against such rivals as Svetozar Gligorić, Pal Benko, Fridrik Olafsson, László Szabó, and István Bilek. In 1968, he won the championship tournament in Wijk aan Zee, and a year later he was already competing in a strong grandmaster tournament.

However, Zbigniew Doda was not just about results and medals. In the club’s memories, he is remembered as “Zbyszek.” A cheerful, witty, and kind-hearted colleague who played countless simultaneous exhibitions, led analyses, shared his experience, and supported younger players. He was a man who not only built his own reputation at the chessboard but also left his mark on the entire chess community. He was a special figure for Lech Poznań. With the club, he won medals in the Polish Team Championships.

His legacy will be honored this year by the contestants of the 4th International Master Zbigniew Doda Memorial. The tournament begins on July 20 and concludes on July 28.
